US judge orders Elon Musk to testify in SEC’s Twitter probe

CNN —A federal judge ordered Elon Musk to testify again in the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s probe of his $44 billion takeover of Twitter, giving the regulator and the billionaire a week to agree on a date and location for the interview. Musk fought the SEC’s bid to interview him, saying it had already done so twice, and accused the regulator of harassment. To settle that case, Musk agreed that a Tesla lawyer would vet his tweets about the electric vehicle maker. The SEC sued him again in 2019 for allegedly breaching that provision. Musk has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the agreement, saying it violates his constitutional right to free speech.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A judge has ordered Elon Musk to testify for a third time as part of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s investigation into his $44 billion purchase of Twitter, now called X, in 2022. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler issued an order Saturday giving Musk, his team and the SEC a week to agree on a date and location for Musk’s testimony. Beeler said, however, that the court is enforcing the SEC's subpoena and that the testimony is “not unduly burdensome” for Musk. The SEC had given Musk the option to testify in Texas, where he lives. The SEC and a lawyer for Musk did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on Monday.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has to testify in a probe by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission concerning his 2022 acquisition of Twitter, a U.S. judge ordered in a court filing out Saturday. Musk closed his acquisition of Twitter in October 2022 in a deal worth roughly $44 billion, and has since rebranded it X. Musk, his attorney Alex Spiro and the SEC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The settlement required Musk to have a "Twitter sitter" approve his tweets about his electric vehicle business before posting them. Attorneys for SpaceX argued in their suit that the very structure of the federal labor board violates the U.S. Constitution.

Known as Direct File, the agency's free filing software pilot will begin as an invitation-only service for a group of government workers before rolling out to certain taxpayers in 12 states by mid-March. Direct File comes after a feasibility report authorized by the Inflation Reduction Act. Internal Revenue ServiceDirect File is 'starting small' with 12 statesThe IRS Direct File pilot intentionally starts with a limited group of taxpayers with relatively simple filings, according to IRS officials. While Direct File won't cover state returns, Arizona, Massachusetts and New York residents can immediately continue to state filing by importing Direct File data. While only certain taxpayers can use Direct File, the bilingual software includes built-in live chat support with IRS assistors.

Arms Race: What Travelers Can Expect in 2024 At the start of what promises to be a very busy year, we look ahead at what you’re likely to encounter. With 2023 in the rearview mirror, we look ahead at what travelers will face in 2024. At United Airlines, for example, smarter software can offer rebooking options and issue food and lodging vouchers when a flight is canceled, rather than just rebooking a flight. United Airlines has suspended its flights indefinitely, said Josh Freed, a United spokesman. This year, travelers are expected to choose faraway places and board small ships, according to Virtuoso, the consortium of luxury travel agencies.

CNN —People shopping for electric vehicles starting next year will be able to get a $7,500 federal tax credit off the sticker price while at the dealership, rather than having to wait months to receive their tax returns. The changes to how car buyers can get the federal tax break on EVs — part of the Inflation Reduction Act — were announced by the Biden administration on Friday, and are being rolled out to car dealerships before they take effect starting January 1. More foreign companies are building EV factories in the US in order to take advantage of the tax credits in the future. The Biden administration is currently contacting dealers with information on how they register with a new federal website to eventually offer consumers up-front tax credits. Car dealers will then be reimbursed by the government within 72 hours of selling the car, according to a Treasury news release.

US IRS to launch free tax e-file pilot program in 2024
  + stars: | 2023-05-16 | by ( David Lawder | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
WASHINGTON, May 16 (Reuters) - The Internal Revenue Service on Tuesday said it would launch a free, government-provided direct tax filing option next year, which could lead to the full-scale launch of an IRS filing system that would compete with private tax preparers. The IRS said in an exploratory report to Congress that 72% of American taxpayers surveyed said they were "very interested in" or "somewhat interested in" using a government tool to electronically file their tax returns. The size, scope and complexity of the pilot program, to be available in the 2024 tax filing season, has yet to be determined, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel told reporters, adding that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen directed the IRS to launch the pilot after reviewing the report. "Americans will be powerless when the IRS completely controls the tax filing process from start to finish," Smith said in a statement. Werfel noted that all filing options would continue, including free e-file options from private firms and non-profit tax advocacy services, paid filing by tax preparers, and free paper filing to the IRS.
